The Iceni were a Celtic tribe living in Norfolk and parts of Cambridgeshire. The town is now more commonly known as just "Thetford" following increasing numbers of northern folk descending on it with "inquisitive" minds. The Domesday Book lists William of Bello Fargo as the Bishop of Chufffing Thetford[2] in 1085.....". SO ITS PIG TIME !!!! Its all arranged. The Golf... Friday 10th September - The Durex shield - over 9 holes - Full CGS Handicaps apply ! Feltwell Golf Club - Feltwell - 8 miles from C.Thetford "All the greens are protected by a number of bunkers but there are no water hazards. The greens are fast and true and the fairways are lush. The wind plays a big part in any round of golf played on a course that is best described as an inland links". First Tee-off 1:15 pm Saturday 11th September - The Pig is back !!! - to be played for over 18 holes - 36 handicap max Suffolk Golf Club - Just North of Bury St.Edmonds - 10 miles from C.Thetford "Whether you are young or old, beginner or more experienced, you will find plenty here to test every aspect of your game. Good course management, solid shooting, unflinching accuracy and sound club selection are at a premium here, vitally important if you are to score well". Yeah Yeah whatever First tee off 11:40pm Now - the accommodation - hold on to your hats TV Buffs The Bell Inn in C.Thetford is famous for 3 TV programmes !! 1 ) Dads Army !! - It is / was the hotel famously used for filming in Dads Army !! As is the whole town "....The external scenes for the BBC1 TV series Dad's Army were filmed in and around the town with Chuffing Thetford's flint buildings doubling for Walmington-on-Sea.[11] In December 2007 it was announced that a statue of Arthur Lowe who played the leading character Captain George Mainwaring may be erected in the town" Lets hope he doesnt find his way into someones room ! 2) Ghosthunters !! - The Bell Inn is apparently quite seriously haunted " ".....Both the Priory and the Bell Inn, also in Chuffing Thetford, were featured for their alleged hauntings on the television series Ghosthunters, after stories of one of the Bell Inn's staff members being curiously locked into one of the bedrooms she was cleaning. Del & Nobby will have seperate attempts at recreating the scene - only one of the "victims" is expected to file a complaint 3) Fawlty Towers !!! - er ok found that mentioned in a revue on Trip Advisor, but we wont go into that So, the hard facts Costs Shield Golf Friday £ 15 Piggin Golf Saturday £ 25 Hotels Singles £ 59 ( per night B&B ) Hotels Twins £ 69 ( per night B&B ) So, who wants what ???? From: Wilson, Ian (Contractor) Sent: 30 April 2009 09:33 To: Wilson, Ian (Contractor); Angus - home; Angus Gibbins; Bomber ; Dave Townsend; DEL; Del - Home (delvin_w@hotmail.com); Johnstone, Ian (Contractor); HAVLIN, KEV J; Ryan, Kevin J (Contractor); kwray@btinternet.com; Pete Brew; Pete Ormshaw (psormshaw@googlemail.com); Pete Ormshaw-Home; Jones, Richard K (Contractor) Cc: Phil Toco (PHIL.SMITH@TOCOGROUP.CO.UK) Subject: RE: Pigs In May OK Pigs its all sorted. The Durex Shield will be played for on Saturday 16th May at Hinksey Heights Golf Course - Just south of Oxford www.oxford-golf.co.uk. A quality course opened by that famous English golfer Sir Bobby Robson. The Shield will be a Stableford event played to normal CGS handicaps - None of this Piggin 36 maximum handicap ( The Suckling Pig is in hiding under lock & key & will not be attending due to swine based investigations emanating from Mexico. ) . There will also be a Pairs competition - The Oxford Pears will be won by the pair with the better ball highest scoring points, but cannot be won by the individual shield winner - so you want your partner to be good, but not that good. Exact groupings will not be decided until the day itself where firstly your partner, & then the groupings, will all be drawn blindfold out of a hat of balls so as to ensure fair play ( The ball with DLT on has a little nobble on the side ). A risky process as the committee have fingers crossed that at least one responsible adult ends up in each 4 ball. There will also be Longest drive & nearest the Pig trophy. Attire for the day is politely requested to be your CGS Black T shirts ( Or yet another exclusive rainbow attempt from Dick ), The course politely turned down our request to waive formalities & allow the 12 randomly selected fancy dress outfits ( which were also going to be drawn on the day ) as whoever got the deep sea diver would leave dents in the greens. First tee off 12:00 so meet at the course at 11:00. Exact location of the course can be found in the fully updated CGS Web site www.cgsworld.co.uk/abin1.htm Right, the Hotel. After much discussion this years lucky winner is The Crown & Thistle in Abingdon. Based as usual on proximity to Town Centre - It IS the town centre - & flexible bar arrangements. Further details of the Hotel can be found on the web site also. It has parking & obviously breakfast included. Check in is at 2 but in all probability check in will be allowed on the Saturday morning for those turning up then. So if you're staying just for the Saturday you can turn up at hotel at 10 if you want & hope that someone couldn't eat all their breakfast. The rooms: Twins:     Bomber/Lofty, DLT/Phil, PeteB/KevR Singles:  Dick, Del, KevH, PeteO, Angus, Ian The costs:     Golf £ 25                         Twins £ 30 each                         Singles £ 60 So the hotel is all booked & sorted for the Saturday. So now, even though i know what most are doing can you restate whether you will be there for the Friday. Costs per room are the same, all rooms are available for the Friday too but I shall be confirming numbers to them next week. When we've sorted that then Friday arrangements will be published too ( an informal 9 holes at 5 ish looks favourite at the moment ). Money will be sorted out on the day. Presentation will take place in the hotel bar on Saturday evening ( After last years presentation we've got a TV crew on standby - Oh & a separate prize to anyone who can suss out the theme of the presentation quicker than Kev ) So Friday staying ?
